In a study released online on July 22 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society: Biological Sciences, researchers at Arizona State University and Princeton University show that ants can accomplish a task more rationally than our - multimodal, egg-headed, tool-using, bipedal, opposing-thumbed - selves.
This is not the case of humans being "stupider" than ants. Humans and animals simply often make irrational choices when faced with very challenging decisions, note the study's architects Stephen Pratt and Susan Edwards.
"This paradoxical outcome is based on apparent constraint: most individual ants know of only a single option, and the colony's collective choice self-organizes from interactions among many poorly-informed ants," says Pratt, an assistant professor in the School of Life Sciences in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The authors' insights arose from an examination of the process of nest selection in the ant, Temnothorax curvispinosus. These ant colonies live in small cavities, as small as an acorn, and are skillful in finding new places to roost. The challenge before the colony was to "choose" a nest, when offered two options with very similar advantages.
What the authors found is that in collective decision-making in ants, the lack of individual options translated into more accurate outcomes by minimizing the chances for individuals to make mistakes. A "wisdom of crowds" approach emerges, Pratt believes.
"Rationality in this case should be thought of as meaning that a decision-maker, who is trying to maximize something, should simply be consistent in its preferences." Pratt says. "For animals trying to maximize their fitness, for example, they should always rank options, whether these are food sources, mates, or nest sites, according to their fitness contribution."
"Which means that it would be irrational to prefer choice 'A' to 'B' on Tuesday and then to prefer 'B' to 'A' on Wednesday, if the fitness returns of the two options have not changed."

Birds Take Quantum Physics to a New Leve: They see Earth's magnetic lines
Since the dawn of mankind, people have always looked upwards in admiration of the flocks of birds heading towards their summer or winter places, stretching wide across the sky, and flying purposefully in a single direction each year. How the animals managed to keep their direction and not get lost was a question few could claim to know the answer to, as it became a bit of a stretch to believe that each of the animals knew thousands of miles of landscape by heart. Now, investigators are starting to believe that the quantum world may play a crucial part in the birds' migration patterns, allowing them to guide the flocks following the planet's own magnetic lines.
Scientists now believe that an oxygen molecule, known as a superoxide, is able to combine with a light-sensitive protein inside the bird eye, and thus form an in-eye compass, which essentially lets the birds see where the Earth's magnetic lines are. “It connects from the subatomic world to a whole bird flying. According to the expert's theory, which was first published in 1978, biochemical reactions in the eyes of birds have as a direct effect the appearance of electrons spinning in certain manners when they are affected by magnetic fields. That is to say, it may be innate to the winged creatures to simply know the correct way the electrons in their eyes should be spinning and to become alarmed when their rotational patterns change. They would then strive to look for the direction that seems most familiar.
Despite the fact that the theory was met with a lot of skepticism when it first appeared, a growing body of pieces of evidence accumulated over the years shows that the quantum entanglement system that is formed in the eyes of birds is so complex, that physicists will need at least a few more decades before creating systems that could rival with it. Additionally, biologists have found molecular pieces of evidence that the system exists, and have recently identified the oxygen as one of the main elements that cause the quantum entanglement.
At this point, no one in the research community can say for sure how birds perceive the magnetic fields. Some say that they see them as dots at the edge of their vision, while others are convinced that the winged creatures see colors or hues. Here are some bulleted excerpts from Witherington's blog about Bell's answers:
First of all, Rob made the blanket statement that you have no moral authority to speak on this issue unless you have gay friends and understand their struggle.
Secondly, Rob then makes an argument from silence which is in fact misleading. The argument is this -- "Jesus never said anything about homosexuality".
Rob then raises the issue of hypocrisy.... that all sexual sin should be taken equally ...
Rob then raises the point that the Bible says nothing about sexual orientation.
Dr. Witherington's dissection of Bell's views on homosexuality is too long to copy here but worth reading.
He ends with these words of advice speaking on matters as confusing as sexual identity in today's culture:

Sex God.....Incredible Concepts....Simple Yet Complex
If you were to go through your garage or storage shelves or sock drawer, Iguarantee we could find the strangest things. I have a trophy from when I was fourteen. The little manon the top fell off sometime in the '90's, the lettering that says what it's for has faded, and the years have revealed that, shockingly, that isn't real marble. But I've kept it. I haven't thrown it away because it's more than a trophy to me. That trophy is the first time I actually won something on my own. It represents a certain period of my life and the struggles of being fourteen and finding my identity and wondering if i'd ever be good at anything.
It's a trophi but it's more than a trophy.
Jewelry, pictures, sculptures made by children, antiques that have been in the family for years, art projects, souveniers, velvet paintings - we hold on to them because they point beyond themselves. If w were to ask you about a certain picture and why you have it displayed in such a prominent place in your home or office or why you carry it in your purse or wallet everywhere you go, you'd probably respond by talking about the people in the picture, where it was taken, when it was taken. But that would only be the start. The relationships and the place and that time are all about something else, thomething more. If kept exploring, you'd probably end up using words like trust and love and belonging and commitment and celebration.
So it's a picture , but it's more than a picture.
This physical thing - this picture, trophy, artifact, gift - is actually about that relationship, that truth, that reality, the at moment in time.
This is actually about that.
Whether it's what we do with our energies
or how we feel about our bodies
or wanting to have the control in our relationships
or trying to recover from heartbreak
or dealing with our ferocious appetites
or the difficulty of communicating clearly with those we love
or longing for something or someone better,
much of life is in some way connected with our sexuality.
And where we begin to sort through all of the issues surrounding our sexuality, we quickly end up in the spiritual,
because this
is always about that!
